Avery Quilt Trail Beginnings
December 2008: Just arrived -- the Barn Quilt poster! Of the 32 (and counting) Quilt Squares dotting the landscape here in Avery County, these twelve adorn beautiful vintage barns -- and one Cheese House. Printed on high quality paper, 18" X 24", suitable for framing. Only $5.00 each, plus tax. Available at the Cheese House Gallery, but can be mailed to you for a small additional charge.

This Quilt Square is the log cabin pattern to pay tribute to the log cabin on which it hangs. Our colors are red, white, and blue as a patriotic nod to the Daughters of the American Revolution who have supported The Crossnore School and its children since the early days of our founder, Mary Martin Sloop, herself a DAR. She and others of her local DAR chapter moved the cabin, already a century old, to its present location on The Crossnore School campus in 1958 for their regular meetings. |

Our quilt square is based on a design called Pine in Snow that we found in a quilt reference book. We altered it to give it a more defined border and changed the name to Pine in Snowy Mountains. Barbara Webster, the Director of the Quilt Trails of Western North Carolina, then perfected the design, and made it a reality. We wanted our square to represent three things that are important to us - the nursery and Christmas tree heritage in Avery County, our love of the North Carolina mountains, and of course hand made objects and art. That is why we liked the idea of the pine tree in a pot…it also represents our studio, Linville River Pottery. |
