This Quilt Square is the log cabin pattern to pay tribute to the log cabin on which it hangs. Our colors are red, white, and blue as a patriotic nod to the Daughters of the American Revolution who have supported The Crossnore School and its children since the early days of our founder, Mary Martin Sloop, herself a DAR. She and others of her local DAR chapter moved the cabin, already a century old, to its present location on The Crossnore School campus in 1958 for their regular meetings. |

A Quilt Square for our Barn
In our daily travels I began to see barns with lovely quilt squares mounted on them. I decided then I wanted a quilt square on our barn. Soon thereafter I read the article about Avery Arts Council needed participants for the Avery Quilt Trail. I contacted them and we began work on the quilt square for our barn.
The pattern I chose was already taken. Time was running out for my selection. I asked my daughter, Marilyn to design a square for our family. We decided to use colors from my husbands “Coat of Arms.” A young lady at the Arts Council office helped us choose paint samples that matched our colors. Fred Pfohl created our quilt square. He did a lovely job.
On July 4, 2008 our quilt square “Storey’s Star,” was installed on the barn. Our barn is located near Beech Mountain Elementary School on Old Beech Mountain. We have enjoyed our quilt square on the barn so much and hope others have also.
Thanks to Avery Arts Council and all others who helped make our dreams come true!

Our quilt square is based on a design called Pine in Snow that we found in a quilt reference book. We altered it to give it a more defined border and changed the name to Pine in Snowy Mountains. Barbara Webster, the Director of the Quilt Trails of Western North Carolina, then perfected the design, and made it a reality. We wanted our square to represent three things that are important to us - the nursery and Christmas tree heritage in Avery County, our love of the North Carolina mountains, and of course hand made objects and art. That is why we liked the idea of the pine tree in a pot…it also represents our studio, Linville River Pottery. |

Sarah Elizabeth McGuire Jones (1889-1938) died before finishing her patchwork quilt, “Sarah’s Song.” Years after Sarah’s death her youngest son, Kenneth, found the worn and tattered quilt top in an old family trunk. Kenneth’s mother-in-law, Bess Glover, quilted the top for him, turning it into a treasured family heirloom. Sarah was the mother of eight children including our Dad, Glenn F. Jones. Glenn’s surviving children, Kathy Ellis, Allen Jones, and Judy Ward choose this pattern to pay tribute to their father’s heritage and to honor his memory by selecting the same pattern and colors used by his mother years ago. |
