Art by Avery Students at Cannon Hospital

Banner Elk, NC   April 8, 2008 – Spring has sprung, and the arts are in bloom at the T. Alan Dickson Gallery, Cannon Memorial Hospital.  The show, which as usual is organized and sponsored by the Avery County Arts Council, features a variety of works from budding artists who attend area schools.

More than one hundred pieces cover the gallery walls in a riot of colors and styles.  There are two and three dimensional items on display alongside paper mosaics, acrylics, pen-and-ink, watercolors, and many other media.  Some of the young artists use a realist technique, while others are abstract or expressionist.  There is literally something for everyone to enjoy.  As Sallie Woodring, the Cannon Hospital’s director of volunteer services puts it, “It is one of the most exciting exhibits we host all year because we see our world through the eyes of a child.”

Student work from Banner Elk Elementary, Beech Mountain Elementary, Newland Elementary, Crossnore Elementary, Cranberry Middle School, Avery High School, Crossnore Academy, and Crossnore School is on display throughout April.  Art teachers Stephanie Jones, Charlene Trestain, Mickey Banner, Michelle Gouge, and Teresa Storie joined forces to hang the artwork created by their students.  A reception honoring the young artists will be hosted by the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, April 29th.
